The Secretary-General of the Higher Population Council, Dr. Abla Amawi, as President of the Arab Council for Population and Development (under the umbrella of the League of Arab States), participates in the coordination meetings aimed at institutional evaluation, strengthening the capacity of the Sudanese National Population Council, and developing a policy for institutional change, held in the Sudan during the period 5-11 January 2020.

The Secretary-General of the Higher Population Council Dr. Abla Amawi, stressed that the Jordanian Council was adopted as one of the best councils in the Arab region, where it is considered an effective model for population councils, and was chosen to represent the Arab region at the population summit meetings at its 52nd session in the United Nations. In addition to its current selection by UNFPA for this task, she pointed out that one of the most prominent objectives of the Arab Council for Population and Development was to promote the exchange of experiences between Arab States and to coordinate them with a view to preparing a future Arab population strategy.

Dr. Amawi indicated that the Council, through its participation in the meetings, would contribute to the identification of linkages between the proposed strategy of  Sudanese National Population Council and the broader context of national planning and priorities, thus establishing the priorities on which the national strategy and the future plan of action of the Sudanese Council for 2020 are based, and identifying the obstacles that could impede the improvement of the Sudanese Council's work programs and the development of appropriate solutions for them, as well as identifying appropriate means of building the capacity of their respective working group.

It is worth mentioning that the importance of developing the Sudanese National Population Council stems from the political change that took place in the Republic of Sudan, which has secretive from a transitional government that seeks freedom, peace and justice, including population and development, as the transitional government defined its national priorities and commitments during the period (2019-2022), with a view to performing its function effectively and efficiently.

The Jordanian Higher Population Council's efforts to strengthen the capacity of the Sudanese National Population Council come in view of its prominent role in supporting population issues at the National, Arab and regional levels, and its outstanding role in the formulation of population policy linked to SDGs, strategies and action plans, follow-up and evaluation of their implementation, and gain support and awareness of the best ways to ensure the investment of demographic returns. In cooperation with partners from different sectors in accordance with best practices.

During the coordination meetings, the Council mission will present a series of presentations on the experience of the Jordanian Higher population Council in the field of strategies, operational plans of action, follow-up and evaluation mechanisms, studies, policies,  programs that  support population issues and the achievement of sustainable development goals. This will contribute to helping those concerned on the Sudanese side develop the population work and link it to the different dimensions of development within its contribution to the welfare of the citizens.
