The National Population Projections Committee & The Technical Committee discussed the updated results of the Population Projections for the Governorates in a meeting held Thursday at Higher Population Council.

The Committee, headed by the Director General of the Department of Statistics, Dr. Qasim Al-Zubi discussed the updated population projections for the Governorates for the years (2012-2050) according to the three total fertility rate scenarios ( High, Medium and Low)  and based on an agreed upon methodology by the population projections technical experts in order to prepare the Jordanian Population Projections report.

The results, which will be published later on in a special report for all Governorates of the Kingdom, shows that according to the various total fertility rate scenarios indicate a major increase in the number of Jordanians for the coming years, particularly, when the Demographic Opportunity reaches its peak in 2030.

The results indicate that the population of the Governorate of Amman is expected to increase from the 2.4 million in 2012 to 3.6 million  in 2030 and 5 million by the year 2025, if the 2012 total fertility rate at 3.2 child per woman continues, which is the high fertility rate scenario.

However, the results shows that if the fertility rate will decline in accordance with the low scenario rate of 2.1 child per woman in reproductive age, the capital population will be at 3,400,000  in 2030 and increase to 4 million in 2050, thus, lower than the expected increase in high fertility rate scenario by one million.

The role of the 22 member committee who represent the various  population and development stakeholders, is to direct the planning of the implementation of population projections in order to meet the needs of the various organizations for national estimates that have been approved and published.
